Silver or grey foliage gives that finishing touch.

Silver is one of the classic neutral colours in the garden, a tone that combines well with virtually anything else. Like a good piece of jewellery, it can help to elevate a garden scene from just "nice" to "stunning"!

Both grey and silver also help to create interest when nearby flowering plants may have already finished or not yet come into bloom.

Side-by-side clashing colours are easily mellowed or tamed by separating them with silver, grey or white.

Here are a few versatile silvery-leaved perennials to consider:

Acaena 'Blue Haze' (New Zealand Burr)
Achillea Anthea or 'Moonshine'Achillea (Yarrow)
Alyssum montanum (Mountain Alyssum)
Anaphalis margaritacea (Pearly Everlasting)
Artemisia (Wormwood), especially 'Huntingdon', 'Powis Castle' and 'Valerie Finnis'.
Athyrium niponicum 'Pictum' (Japanese Painted Fern)
Cerastium tomentosum (Snow-in-Summer)
Dianthus (Pinks) - silver or blue-grey leaved selections.
Helianthemum (Rock Rose) - silvery-leaved selections like 'Henfield Brilliant' or 'Wisley Pink'.
Heuchera (Coral-bells) - metallic-leaved forms like 'Pewter Veil' and 'Checkers'.
Hosta 'Krossa Regal' and other powdery-leaved types.
Lamium maculatum (Creeping Lamium), especially 'White Nancy' and 'Pink Pewter'.
Lavandula (Lavender)
Lychnis coronaria (Rose Campion)
Perovskia atriplicifolia (Russian Sage)
Salvia argentea (Silver Sage)
Santolina (Lavender Cotton)
Stachys byzantina (Lamb's-ears)
Verbascum bombyciferum (Giant Silver Mullein)
Veronica spicata incana (Woolly Speedwell)
